Beckenbauer : Bayern win important for Germany's Euro 2012 chances
German playing great Franz Beckenbauer said Friday Bayern Munich's performance against Chelsea in the Champions League final could have a knock-on effect for the German national team ahead of Euro 2012.
The mood in the German camp "will not be particularly good" if the Bayern players join the national squad having failed to win a title this year, Beckenbauer told Antenne Bayern radio.
"That's why it would be a big advantage for the national team if Bayern are Champions League winners," he said. Bayern have eight players in Joachim Loew's provisional squad of 27 players for Euro 2012 from June 8 to July 1 in Ukraine and Poland.
Beckenbauer, who won the old European Cup three times in as many seasons with Bayern between 1974 and 1976, said the outcome of Saturday's final in Munich's Allianz Arena would also decide the success or failure of Bayern's season. Bayern were beaten to the league title by Borussia Dortmund who then beat Bayern in the German Cup final.
But Beckenbauer, now Bayern's honorary president, said: "The Champions League is the benchmark. It is like a World Cup for national teams."
Meanwhile former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who won the Champions League with both Bayern and Dortmund, told Welt daily Friday a victory for Bayern would be a boost for all German football. Hitzfeld said he was optimistic about Bayern's chances, saying the club had often risen to the occasion in the past. "It is a competition which is more or less made for them. There are not many clubs who are able to produce great games at exactly the right time," he said.
