» England leave out Ferdinand from Euro
 |
Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand |
England manager Roy Hodgson named his 23-man squad for Euro 2012 on Wednesday, with Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand the most notable exclusion. The 33-year-old centre back was left out while Chelsea captain John Terry was included, as was Liverpool striker Andy Carroll. Wayne Rooney, who will miss the first two matches because of suspension, will go to Ukraine and Poland but there was no place in the squad for Darren Bent, Adam Johnson or Daniel Sturridge. Tottenham full back Kyle Walker was ruled out because of a broken toe. Ferdinand has struggled with a series of injuries and playing three group games in a week and a half against France, Ukraine and Sweden at the June 8-July 1 tournament would have tested his fitness. But UK newspapers on Wednesday said the decision is down to Ferdinand not being willing to play alongside Chelsea's John Terry. Terry is due to face charges in July that he racially abused Anton Ferdinand, Rio's younger brother, when Chelsea played Queens Park Rangers in a league match midway through the season. Stoke City striker Peter Crouch, who has an excellent goalscoring record for England, was also told by Hodgson that he will not make it. Manchester City defender Michah Richards also missed out while Adam Johnson and Sturridge were only on the standby list should anyone get injured. Full squad: Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Rob Green (West Ham), John Ruddy (Norwich City) Defenders: Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton) Midfielders: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Man City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Ashley Young (Man United), James Milner (Man City) Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Man United), Danny Welbeck (Man United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham)
